This cover of Le Rire, from 1896, depicts a gentleman and an escort of some variety (mistress or prostitute), sitting at a fashionable restaurant in Paris in the midst of discussion, under the watchful eye of the doorman who is seen in the background of the image.

"Jeanne, take, without your being noticed, my wallet out of the left hand pocket of my overcoat."

"And then after?"

"You will pass it to me, pointedly, at checkout, as if it were yours."

With this cover, Lautrec is making a commentary on the snobbish hypocrisy that existed in society at the time.
