This is an original Belle Époque period lithograph by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for Le Rire magazine titled "Skating." In this work, Lautrec gives the viewer a glimpse into the popular social pastime of indoor skating at the turn of the 20th century.

This scene shows a blonde skater, in an elegant brown dress and black hat, holding onto the railing near a gentleman in a top hat. He has bright orange gloves that match his beard and is peering through his monocle as he prepares his drink. In the background you see a waiter balancing drinks and a variety of ladies and gentlemen. The content of this image, coupled with his playful and bold lines, effortlessly captures the movement and atmosphere of this popular Parisian pastime.

"Skating" was recently featured in an exhibition on Toulouse-Lautrec's poster designs at the Museum of Modern Art, and is also in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
